Under-Eye Bags and Dark Circles Treatment

Dark circles and under-eye bags are common concerns that contribute to a tired, dull, and aged appearance. Although often mistaken for one another, dark circles are typically caused by pigmentation or vascular issues, while bags result from fluid retention or excess fatty tissue. At Image, we offer personalized protocols that may include under-eye fillers, draining treatments, and advanced medical technologies to firm, brighten, and decongest the periocular area. A thorough medical approach is essential to correctly identify the causes and achieve a natural, balanced, and long-lasting result.

About

What Is It?

Dark circles manifest as a dark shadow under the eyes, mainly due to genetic factors, slowed microcirculation, or thinning of the skin, which makes underlying capillaries more visible. Stress, lack of sleep, and dehydration can worsen them, making the eyes look duller and more tired. Hyperpigmentation of the periocular area, typical of darker skin types, can also contribute to their appearance. Under-eye bags, on the other hand, appear as swelling of the lower eyelid, caused by an accumulation of fluids or fat. Aging is a determining factor: over time, tissues lose tone and orbital fat can protrude, giving rise to bags. Other triggering factors can be water retention, excessive salt consumption, alcohol use, or lack of rest.

How To Treat It

Aesthetic medicine for bags under the eyes provides different types of treatments depending on the type and the extent of the condition.

In case of edematous bags, which are constant due to a change in the lymphatic system, manual and non-manual drainage treatments can be useful: lymphatic drainage massages and facial cupping, draining mesotherapyozone therapy.

In the case of fat herniation bags, however, there are two options:

  • surgery (blepharoplasty or lower blepharoplasty) gives a definitive solution;
  • new lipolytic injections for the periocular area can dissolve the fat herniation.

Aesthetic medicine provides different solutions for dark circles.

When these darkened circles are due to skin pigmentation, lightening treatments are suggested: for example, Fraxel Dual laserpeelings or lightening injections (skin-whitening infusions based on glutathione).

On the other hand, if dark circles are due to an excessive transparency of the underlying layers as a result of thinning related to ageing, they can be treated with Lipogems® technique as well as specific skinboosters or laser which, improves the dermal component, returning thickness to the skin – and consequently improving the problem.
