SKIN
Xanthelasmas are yellowish-white papular or nodular lesions, rather unsightly, that appear on the eyelids and in the surrounding skin areas.
These are small growths formed by deposits of lipid material in the subcutaneous area. They generally appear on one or both eyelids, particularly at the inner corner of the upper ones or in the area closest to the nose (inner canthus). However, it is not uncommon for them to appear on the lower eyelids as well.
In 95% of cases, there is no specific cause. However, sometimes xanthelasmas can be a symptom of lipid metabolism disorders such as familial hypercholesterolemia, or appear in the presence of primary biliary cirrhosis, pancreatitis, hypothyroidism, and some forms of tumors.
Xanthelasmas are easy to remove, with great patient satisfaction, and the procedure, which is outpatient and quick, is done under local anesthesia using laser or surgical excision. Although the results are more than satisfactory in both cases, with surgical removal the risk of recurrence is lower.
