Mentoplasty
No detail escapes the search for an ideal aesthetic. A protruding chin, or a receding and disproportionate one, can visibly distort the harmony of the face. Furthermore, in the collective imagination, a receding chin has been associated with shyness and lack of character. On the other hand, a prominent one was attributed to people of lower social background, especially in the past.
What is a mentoplasty
Mentoplasty combines techniques of aesthetic surgery and plastic-reconstructive surgery to correct the shape of the chin, in order to transform defects into harmonious elements, thus also leading to more positive self-perception. Mentoplasty is often performed in synergy with rhinoplasty in order to correct both features in those cases where, for example, a receding chin is paired with a very prominent nose.
How mentoplasty is performed
There are three techniques used in performing a mentoplasty:
- bone surgery
- prosthesis
- Lipogems® (in specific cases).
For example, in certain receding chin cases, the correction can be performed with Lipogems®, avoiding having to undergo mentoplasty surgery. However, in order to resolve a receding chin defect, a full mentoplasty is required.
