Loose or sagging skin on the back of the arms can be a very serious imperfection, which often generates profound discomfort and compels you to constantly wear long-sleeved clothing. It is seen as closely associated with aging, especially by women, in whom the triceps brachii is less developed and “softer” than in men.
Causes of laxity on the arms
The looseness appears for various reasons: from normal physiological deterioration due to age (it is a similar type of sagging to that of the face, which is also linked to individual morphology and the presence or absence of muscle mass), to the accumulation of fat in that area. It is also a common symptom of drastic weight loss that leaves excess skin.
What is a brachioplasty
An arm lift, also called brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure that reshapes the upper arm, removing excess fat and skin to create a more toned appearance.
There will be an immediately noticeable improvement in the affected area following an arm lift, and will continue to progressively increase in the following weeks. In many cases, patients experience a renewed self-esteem and rediscover their self-confidence.
Scars after a brachioplasty
Scarring represents the only undesirable effect: depending on the degree of correction performed, it may be positioned along the medial-posterior surface of the arm, near the posterior axillary fold or in the axilla region.
This blemish that occurs following the arm lift can be treated and improved later with ablative procedures such as Fraxel and CO2 fractionated Laser. Some patients choose to camouflage the scar with a tribal tattoo.
In summary
For whom it is appropriate
For those patients who, following significant and stable weight loss over time, have excess of skin in their upper arms; patients with localized obesity and lipodystrophy of the arms; in cases of sagging skin when other treatments and the gym do not produce satisfactory results.
Age
The procedure is considered an “adult” operation, because young subjects generally have all the time and possibilities to shape their body with the right gym or exercise routine. However, in cases of excess loose skin on formerly obese people, the intervention can be performed at any age from adolescence onwards.
Method
Local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia.
Recommended post-surgery treatments
Post-surgical massage for the reabsorption of edema (swelling caused by excess fluid in your body’s tissues); procedures to soften the scar.
Duration
The arm lift takes about an hour.
Social return
Immediate.
