Skin Spots, Solar Lentigo

Solar lentigo, as the definition itself suggests, manifests as a consequence of sun exposure: UV rays cause the hyperproliferation of melanocytes and the accumulation of melanin inside certain skin cells, known as keratinocytes. Solar lentigines are very common, especially in people over 40 years old: they are often also called "old age spots," "senile spots," "senile lentigo," "senile freckles."

About

What Is It?

Skin spots and solar lentigines are among the most common skin imperfections, especially after prolonged sun exposure. Although they are generally harmless, they can be a sign of skin aging or excessive UV ray exposure. Skin spots and solar lentigines are a consequence of sun exposure and skin aging, but with proper prevention and appropriate treatments, it's possible to achieve more uniform and radiant skin. Skin spots are pigmentation alterations that manifest as darker patches compared to normal skin color. Among the most common are solar lentigines, also known as age spots or sun spots, which appear as small areas of hyperpigmentation, predominantly on the face, hands, décolletage, and other areas exposed to sunlight. Unlike hereditary freckles, solar lentigines develop over time due to accumulated UV ray exposure and tend to appear after age 30-40.

How To Treat It

If skin spots have already appeared, there are numerous Dermatological treatments:

    • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL): an effective treatment for reducing discoloration and stimulating skin regeneration.
    • Chemical peels based on glycolic or mandelic acid to promote cell turnover.
    • Q-Switch Laser acting selectively on melanin without damaging surrounding tissues.
